About the Indian Ringneck Parrot
The Indian Ringneck Parrot is a medium-sized parrot originally from Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Today, they are bred worldwide and have become popular in the exotic bird trade. These resilient birds can adapt to a wide range of climates, even enduring very cold winters.
Description
Indian Ringnecks are sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females can be distinguished by appearance once mature. Males over 18 months develop a dark ring around the neck, while both sexes share a striking green plumage, red beak, and long blue tail. Over the years, breeders have developed numerous color mutations including blue, yellow, turquoise, violet, grey, white, pied, and others. Adult ringnecks typically measure 15–17 inches, with a tail roughly as long as their body.
Vocalization and Training
Indian Ringnecks are highly intelligent and excellent talkers, capable of mimicking words, whistles, and sounds. While their high-pitched calls can be loud, they are generally brief and manageable, making them suitable for homes, condos, or apartments—especially when keeping just one. However, they are not ideal for beginner bird owners. Ringnecks go through a challenging “teenage” stage lasting 6–12 months, during which they may be flighty and prefer independence. Consistent, patient handling is crucial to raising a well-trained adult parrot.
Lifespan and Diet
With proper care, Indian Ringnecks can live 20–30 years, though many do not reach this age due to improper diet or exercise. At Tropi Parrots, we ensure every baby is weaned on a premium diet, including plain cockatiel seed mix, RoudyBush Mini Maintenance Pellets, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
